The iPhone 4S has been with us for over a month now and has stood the test of a brief time quite well. It has increased with popularity and everyone seems quite happy after the debacle of the iPhone 5 no show. As well as being perhaps the most heavily criticised iPhone release, this has also been the most popular by far, with over 4 million sales in the first weekend alone. So, what are the factors that have made iPhone 4S contracts so popular and allowed it to be the biggest smartphone success story of 2011?
Processor
The phone’s A5 processor is one of the best factors of the phone and its pace is amazing. This is added to by a state of the art GPU, which is seven times faster than the iPhone 4’s and a lot faster than the graphical processor in other phones. This really ensures it surpasses most of the phones out there, showing quality, well engineered software is the key to a good phone.
Even though the iPhone 4S comes with just 512MB RAM, like the iPhone 4, it is still smoother and more efficient than many Android phones with 1GB. This goes to show that Apple’s philosophy of having a perfect synergy between hardware and software will beat raw tech specs time after time. The iPhone 4S is able to offer a better performance with less memory at its disposal.
Screen
Though the screen of the iPhone 4S is one of the oldest of the current generation of phones it is still the best in many ways. So far, no other smartphone screen, with the possible exception of the Samsung Galaxy S2′s Super AMOLED Plus, has even come close to beating the vivid vibrancy and sharp detail of the Retina Display found on the iPhone 4 and 4S.
When you are already offering the best screen on the market, is there any real need to make it better? The size of the resolution is fantastic and the phone’s screen is responsive and accurate and is still one of the best for reading text and watching videos on. Though not as bright as AMOLED, it is a lot more detailed and crisp.
Siri
Of course Siri is one of the main reasons for the phones success. The voice control is deeply integrated in the phone and really adds to the experience. The fact you can ask Siri any range of questions, from searching for obscure questions on the Internet to keeping a calendar, is absolutely amazing. The fact that Siri will even tell you if there are any issues with the date in question is even more amazing. Siri is not only a gadget, but it is also an amazing piece of technology.
Unlike other voice control features found on Android and Windows Phone 7, Siri is heavily integrated into every facet of the iPhone 4S. You can use it in conjunction with other apps, either to load them or even make use of their features. Other voice assistants will require you to memorise a very strict set of commands, such as “Call person A”, or “Compose Message”, but Siri will understand your natural conversational language.
If you ask “Will I need an umbrella today?” Siri will understand that you are inquiring about the weather in your local area. Say “call my wife”, and Siri will know who you are referring to, even if your wife is entered into your contacts list under her real name. This is the real beauty of Siri, and what puts it head and shoulders above voice controls on other smartphone platforms.
iCloud
The iCloud of course is the other major selling point of the phone and is a fantastic addition to iOS. Even though the iPhone 4S comes with three different options for storage, 16GB, 32GB and 64GB, this will soon become irrelevant with features like iCloud at your disposal.
Rather than storing all of your music and videos on your phone, taking up valuable storage space, you can store them in the cloud. What truly makes iCloud stand out in this regards however, is that you do not even need to consume your cloud storage space with music either, as you can just register your iTunes Track IDs and stream your music from Apple’s central music library.
Although on the surface the iPhone 4S is no different to the iPhone 4, it has a vast number of improvements made that are not so obvious from a quick glance. Siri and iCloud alone will completely change the way you use, and think about, smartphones from now on. The iPhone 4S may just shape up to be the biggest smartphone revolution since the original iPhone in 2007. With this in mind, who cares about the iPhone 5?
